dftc is so excited to announce our Spring 2025 production of M. Butterfly! 🦋Auditions, both in-person and through video submission, and the designer application, are OPEN NOW!➡️ Shows will be March 7-9, so SAVE THE DATE! ⬅️M. Butterfly, written by David Henry Hwang, tells the intricate and tragic story of René Gallimard, a French diplomat, and Song Liling, a Chinese opera singer who is later revealed to be a spy and a man disguised as a woman. Drawing inspiration from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, the play delves into themes of love, betrayal, and cultural misperceptions. Gallimard views Song as his idealized “Butterfly,” reinforcing his fantasies of dominance, while Song manipulates Gallimard to gather intelligence for Communist China. The story’s dramatic conclusion underscores the devastating consequences of deception and the distortions of identity and desire under the Western gaze.

Dorothy’s Friends Theatre Company is an LGBTQ+ theatre company devoted to producing works that are more representative of the queer community. dftc wants to actively celebrate queer stories and normalize the experiences of the queer community. The majority of LGBTQ+ stories currently being produced on stage are predominantly stories of pain, and although these tragedies are an important chapter in our history, these stories do not tell the complete truth of the queer experience in the modern world. dftc is devoted to fostering a creative community of individuals who identify as LGBTQ+, and strives to build alliances with the broader school community and unify the student body as a whole through open and unbiased casting, and equal and equitable opportunities for those seeking to be members of the creative team.The term “friend of Dorothy” originated in the 1940s from Judy Garland’s seminal performance as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Since Garland was considered a gay icon, the euphemism became a quick, easy, and safe way for members of the LGBT community to identify each other when homosexuality was illegal. These days, it is much easier for us to be open about and proud of our identities, but we want to honor the legacy of those who came before us in everything that we do. If you’re a friend of Dorothy, you’re safe with us.
